Borderlands #5

Victor & Argent:

Drakkimor is delighted to have both of you on board. Turning the man-monster behind him he'll say. "This is my bodyguard, Gorso."

At this Gorso grins showing black teeth.

"He's part ogre and all muscle."

When asked about the particulars of the mission.

"Demara's ruins lie approximately four days distant on horse back, in the foothills to the northwest. I would suggestion purchasing two weeks of rations. Crysania, the priest I mentioned earlier, would be able to purify any food that spoils."

"We'll ride hard during the day and rest each night. Guards will not be needed as I shall create a magical shelter each evening. Upon reaching the ruins, we'll first scout the ruins and find a place to make a base camp. Further operations will depend upon the obstacles we encounter. My aim is fully clean out the ruins and then explore for Demara's lost horde. Divinations I've had Crysania cast spoke of 'danger on the wing'. The exact type of danger is unknown. Since there are winged demons and Demara did consort with demons, I'm preparing to encounter beings from the Abyss."

At the moment for purposes of splitting magic items, Victor is last in XP's in this group. Argent is next to last. This IS a high powered group you've hooked up with. :)

"We may possibly need a thief", Drakkimor will say. "You know one that is trustworthy?"

"We shall depart first thing the day after tomorrow. Tomorrow evening I'll be holding a small get together here at the Marksend. A sort of mixer for everyone to meet each other and mingle. I'll see you both tomorrow!"

Nightshadow:

Each entrance/exit to the bazaar has a guard on either side. Guards also mingle with the customers. It'll be very difficult to be out of the sight of a guard.

Still wish to try picking pockets? Tossing the apple would be very difficult to pull off unspotted.

Ambar:

"Two gold for the room", Franco will correct, "and one for the stabling."

Guitar prices are as per the Bards Handbook. What kind do you want?

The man at the Land Owner's Guild breaks out his price list.

"I'm sorry to say that there are no openings in Old Town at this time. However, there are several prime properties in New Town and Cross Town."

New Town is the next posh neighborhood after Old Town. Here's what's available in New Town:

A 20' x 30' wood home, 2 stories, includes basement, good condition, asking price 1,125 gold.

A 35' x 50' wood & stone home, 2 floors plus attic, good condition, asking price 6000 gold.

A 25' x 35' wooden home, 2 stories with attic and basement, good condition, 2000 gold.

A 30' x 40' stone home, 1 floor, with attic and basement, good condition, asking price is 4000 gold.

"Surely one of these fine homes would suit one of noble blood?"

Krim will charge 20 gold for the hat.

Drakkimor shrugs and says, "As you wish", when he decline to join his expedition.

Kaylin:

"I won't bother them, as long as they don't bother me", Renford says about the cats. Renford seems the easy going type who loves to travel and adventure.

"While I'm not a scout, your job does sound interesting. I never minded scragging a few goblins. Dirty creatures! Your terms seem fair. We are required to handle our own transportation and food?"

Before leaving to meet Ambar, you'll encounter Gloriana. She's a lovely half-elf wearing a white gown laced up the front. Her hair is styled and blonde. The eyes of all men in the Inn are on her.

"Greetings, Kaylin, I'm Gloriana, Priestess of Mystra and Mage. I've heard of your task and seek to assist Felex in his quest. Will you have me?"

Gloriana also finds your terms agreeable. :)

Now what?

As they leave the inn, Victor turns to Argent and says, "Well, first order of business for me is to get a horse and a mule. Then I'll need to look into rations and some specialized gear. What are your plans for the afternoon?"

After the day's shopping, Victor will try to get back to the inn in time for the evening meal. He'll keep an eye out for Kitterina. If he sees her, he'll wave her over to his table. "If you're interested, I am going out on a quest with a large party to explore some dungeons. They wouldn't object to taking along someone with expertise in traps and locks, as long as that person used their skills solely for the good of the group and not for any personal enrichment at the group's expense. Considering the caliber of these people, it would be unwise to get on their bad side. Do you have such skills and would you be willing to operate under those constraints?"

(A slight change from my previous post)

As Nightshadow gets ready to toss the apple core, thinking no one is watching, she glances around and sees one of the Bazaar's guards looking directly at her.

She then notices that there are more guards there than she had seen earlier and holds onto the apple core as she grumbles in elvish about there being too many guards for her liking.

After disposing of the apple core, since she dare not take the chance of being observed doing with it what she had wanted to do, Nightshadow browses some of the shops in the Bazaar, hoping to pick out a few marks to hit once they leave.

In one shop she goes in, she will see a small beautiful purple cloak she wants and works on the merchant to lower the price of it.

Afterwards she departs the Bazaar, sneering at the guard on the way out, then once outside she will pick a few pockets, and then head back to the High Road Inn.

SUBJ: Argent FROM: Enchantres 05/20/93 S#: 437803

'Thank you, Drakkimor. I guess I'll see you tomorrow night then!'

Later walking back to the Inn with Vic.

'He certainly seems like a nice guy. It certainly will be different not being the most powerful mage in the group! My plans? Well, I'll need to pick up a horse and rations. But otherwise I think I'm set. I think I'll head over to the Wizards Familiar tonight and scope out the guys!'

SUBJ: Ambar (R) FROM: Reveler 05/20/93 S#: 430334

"A gittern, my dear fellow. And I want your finest workmanship... please, take your time. I'll expect it no sooner than two months from now." Ambar will pay one quarter of the price now, with the rest on delivery, as he doesn't want to tie up that much cash right now.

"Hmm..." Ambar showed some interest in the one floor stone model, with basement and attic. As he fingered the artist's rendering, the light gleamed darkly in the carved garnet of his signet ring. "I'll want to arrange to have a look at it. I'm still finding my way about town, and my schedule fluctuates from day to day. When it's a bit more stable, I'll be in touch."

On his way back to the Marksend Inn, Ambar played with his hat. There... that hid his ears, and he could tuck most of his silvery hair into the crown. One of his quills, a shimmery thing of fairy gossamer stuff that wasn't nearly as fragile as it looked, was slipped into the brim, and he smoothed it down. It set off the deep, dark blue of the hat beautifully, and he smiled as he walked down the avenues and alleyways, looking at the sights.

Back to conversations with Renford and Gloriana:

"My basic directions are two days downriver. I should meet with the scout shortly and finalize exact details. However, unless the scout suggests otherwise, I expect a mount would be needed even if we take passage to ride the river south."

"Food, well... very basic rations can be provided but if your tastes run to better, as indeed mine do, each will need to do their own supplementing."

"Hmm... I wonder what else I left out? Departure I expect in a few days but I'll know more exactly as I gather folk for this venture."

"And I'm very happy to have each of you along, Master Renford, Mistress (or should that be Lady?) Gloriana." (If the conversations are separate, she'll say it to each... :)

Other than that, I don't see any change to what's been said previously. She keeps updating her personal notes about what to do tomorrow but that seems to still be a ways off. :)

Dinner note:

She's wearing a nicer tunic and breeches and her soft boots, a braid twists through her curls (momentarily untangled but not likely to stay that way for long) and she carries her cloak and duffle bag with the lute case in the duffle. (It's convenient to carry that way. :) Geordie is on her shoulder and T'ang is trotting along beside her unless the road gets too busy or dusty or whatever in which case she demands to be carried too.

SUBJ: Ambar FROM: Reveler 05/22/93 S#: 409410

Ambar sat down, setting a bottle before Harlo. "Thank you for your recommendation, friend Harlo. I have contracted for a fine gittern, of which I will take delivery in a few months. I shall not be playing in that time, but my voice could use the work. Nothing is ever a total loss."

Ambar spoke to Harlo of the day's activities, quietly enthusiastic about his half-elven (Sorry, Kaylin!) dinner companion. As the dinner hour approached, Ambar excused himself from the table with a smile and a wink. He called for an excellent meal for two to be laid out, and went upstairs to change.

Coming down, Ambar was a sight to see, and his laughing violet eyes flicked over the common room, gauging the effect his appearance had.

The hat was gone, the hair revealed as a silvery cascade down to his mid-back. It lay over the shoulders of a brilliant red silk jacket, ornate golden embroidery depicting intertwined Dragons. His tunic was a sky blue, its bloused sleeves gathered at each wrist and secured with golden cufflinks, each embossed with the same dragon motif. His belt carried a single stiletto in an ornate sheath. Hose in the same blue encased his slim, powerful legs and led to soft riding boots with an even grey color to them.

He took a seat, and his pale, well-manicured hand stood out sharply against the blue of his tunic as he took a glass of wine from the steward. Looking delighted, he approved the wine.

Well! Here she thought she'd dressed up a bit (didn't care to wear her best and only dress hiking through the streets but otherwise her best wear) but now she feels like a scruffy, well a scruffy something or other... But my o my, if she DID have the funds and all, she'd like to look half as good as her dinner companion. About this point, Geordie kneads her shoulder off the reinforced pad and brings her back to sanity.

"My, my, Master, or should that be Lord, Ambar. Such a lovely meal I don't know when I've seen. And to hear Master Harlo play... a truly special night. Have you had a productive afternoon?" She pulls out her best charming smile just for the practice although it's well out-classed. (Okie, no more on that line... T'ang just clawed her leg and Geordie nipped her ear. She gets the message. :)

"Did you find an instrument to your liking? And a hat?" She gives up the smile for a friendly grin.

Borderlands #6

Nightshadow:

'Shadow's day does not get any better. After leaving Pander's Bazaar, she tracks a rich looking merchant. She makes her move for his coin purse when at the last instant he turns away from her. Fortunately, he did not notice the attempt.

Undaunted, Nightshadow tries again. A finely dressed woman passes by. Luck is not with Nightshadow as she not only misses the ladies purse, but is noticed by the woman!

"HELP! Thief!!", the woman cries.

Ambar:

Carillon accepts the job and says that it will take only about 3 weeks to create the instrument. It costs a total of 55 gp.

The man at the Landowner's Guild says that he will contact the owner to arrange a tour. The current owner is Vasco the Limner.

Kaylin:

Both Gloriana and Renford agree to your mission. All Renford asks is when and where to meet when you depart Elcadan.

"It's just Gloriana", she'll say to Kaylin. "I have a rough idea where Mystra's fallen temple is. I can be ready to depart anytime."

None of the other prospects appear during the rest of this day.

SUBJ: Ambar FROM: Reveler 05/25/93 S#: 432103

Ambar smiled delightedly at Kaylin while holding her chair for her, nodding with a twinkling in his eye to T'ang and Geordie. "My day was relatively productive... a hat has been purchased, and if you're in the market, Krim the Hatmaker is quite good."

"I shall be without an instrument for several weeks, but the lack will be remedied. Carillon has graciously agreed to make me a gittern, although he wants dreadfully little for it. I am hoping to encourage him to take his time and do some elaborate scrollwork on the soundbox and up the neck."

"Having newly arrived and taken care of most of my business, I find myself somewhat at a loss for something to do. I considered Master Drakkimor's expedition... but the Enchantress Demara's home may be prove to be more than they are expecting. Should they return, I might consider going with the second expedition... or running one of my own."

He took a sip of wine, and smiled at her. "And what brings such a lovely young lady as yourself out here?"

Mad, 55 is the list price for a Gittern. I want it at LEAST twice list, with commensurate skill used in its construction.

'OH SHIST!!' thinks Shadow as she hears the woman say thief and cries for help, and turns away quickly, hoping the woman didn't get a good look at her face.

Not knowing what they do to thieves in this town, she pulls the cloak's hood over her head to prevent anyone from seeing her face and runs.

If Shadow is pursued, she will take to the alleyways in hopes of eluding the guards, and will use her magic to turn herself invisible.

And if Shadow manages to escape capture, she will stay in her room until nightfall, then stow her gear on her horse and depart Elcadan to search out the Dorwynn Elfholds.

To Renford:

"When and where shall we depart? Hmm... as I said, I have not connected with all I hope to have in the party but let's say, two days hence from this inn. If something comes up to change that, I shall leave word with Galtman here, and, if you care to leave your direction, I'll send you word." Kaylin considers. "Yes... I would also like to meet the night before at 5pm for a short briefing of final details and such coordination."

"Have I overlooked anything else?"

To Gloriana:

The same as with Renford and "You know something of where the temple lies? Hmm... would your information suggest 'downriver' by boat or by mount?"

Then to Galtman:

"I know I am abusing your services so perhaps you could apply this towards my debt to you?" She smiles as she hands him a couple of coins to indicate this is not for room or board. "I hope to meet with the others you mentioned soon. Tonight I am off to hear Master Harlo play and I do not know when I shall return. However, if anyone should ask, I will plan to break my fast here in the common room at, oh, about 8am and will be in and out through the day." She also makes arrangements for her planned briefing as specified with Renford and such.

And back to dinner... :)

"Thank you, Master Ambar." As she sits. "I'm glad you are pleased with your day. You mentioned to me earlier why your path came to Elcadan. Me, my path just seemed to end up here. However, once here, all became clear. I have an opportunity to gain a proper home for my Lord Felex. So I am gathering a party to scout out the area." She shrugs. "Probably little profit in the scouting run besides information of the area to be used later..."

She breaks off as a musician begins to play. "Oh! Is that Master Harlo?"

SUBJ: Update (R) FROM: GM Mad 05/26/93 S#: 437844

Nightshadow runs off. She gets a huge jump on the guards and is able to flee New Town before being spotted. Shadow makes it to the High Road Inn without incident.

Any special preparations for the trip?

Renford agrees with Kaylin's plan of action.

"See you later", he says.

Gloriana thinks about whether to go by river or by horse.

"I'd have to say by horse. Only because if we're forced to flee it would be faster on horseback. When I heard of your expedition I looked through the temple records. According to what I read, the Temple is located less then a mile inland from the river. It is situated on a hill top. The hill itself is forest. Paths are supposed to crisscross the hill. That's about all I can offer as far as information."

Harlo begins to play and both Ambar and Kaylin are mildly surprised. Harlo is simply not too impressive with the guitar. However, he makes up for his playing skills with his enthusiasm as a story teller. He adds a touch of the dramatic to his tales, compensating for this playing skills.

Now what?

SUBJ: Ambar FROM: Reveler 05/27/93 S#: 420477

Ambar concealed his dismay at the playing, hoping that the gittern he had just ordered would not turn out similarly. Turning back to his lovely dinner companion, he smiled warmly.

"I must confess to not knowing much about Lord Felex. Perhaps you would enlighten me? And perhaps I could offer another pair of not-untrained hands to your mission.

"My inquiries here have so far gained me no information regarding my own loss, but it is yet early to expect such a response. I will be traveling the city again tomorrow, and possibly speaking with one Vasco the Limner, who apparently has a most excellent home that he wishes to sell.

"Until I succeed in securing such a home, however, I will be enjoying the accommodations of this most excellent Inn." His nose didn't quite twitch, but Kaylin could tell he was thinking of the guitar player. "The stories told here are first rate..."

Nightfall arrives and Shadow begins to descend the stairs to head for the stables then remembers that she has clothes at the Laundry Service and returns to her room for the evening after getting and paying for a bottle of Arabellan Dry wine and a bowl of fruit.

The next morning, Shadow goes to the stables and gets her horse and walks it back to the Inn and ties the reins to the post. She then goes inside and up to her room to get her gear.

After coming back down, she stops at the bar and requests that one of the 2 skins she places on the be filled with Arabellan Dry wine. Shadow then asks for some fruit to take with her and pays Galtman for it.

Once outside, she stows her gear on her horse and leads it to the Laundry service where she picks up her clean clothing. She leaves the building and picks a pocket on the way to her horse.

She stow her clothes and mounts up and rides off to begin her journey for the Dorwynn Elfholds.

"Ah, yes..." she nods at Ambar. "Indeed, very intriguing stories... And aside from the, er, dip in the swamp, what areas of Elcadan and the environs did you find most interesting?"

(Ambar, I hope I'm not changing to subject too badly... The player got distracted with offline stuff... :)

Borderlands #7

The day after the dinner with Ambar, Kaylin meets another of her would-be applicants.

This time it is a man by name of Geoff. He is human, plainly dressed and wears a green cloak. Geoff has brown hair, balding on the top, but with a full beard.

"I may be able to help you, ma'am. I'm a skilled scout."

Geoff has no problems with your terms and will sign on if you'll have him. The cats seem indifferent of Geoff.

Kaylin finds the High Road Inn virtually deserted now. Almost everyone has gone off on assorted jobs. You can move into a full private room if you wish.

SUBJ: Ambar (R) FROM: Reveler 06/03/93 S#: 447522

To Kaylin: I hope we can speak again, on the subject of Lord Felex. I might be interested in accompanying you... as long as your plans do not include diving in bogs. :)

The next day Ambar arose early, but stayed in his room. After taking care of his spells for the day, he sat down and began oiling his second best rapier while speaking softly to Achmed.

"Yes, the cats are wonderful. It might be an interesting trip, just to pick up a bit of change. Hmmm? Yes, I suppose I should. Perhaps that will be today's first order of business."

Slipping the rapier into its scabbard, he walked downstairs and out of the Inn into the early morning air.

Stopping to buy an orange in the market, he looked about him. A lovely atmosphere, he thought as he walked, sucking the juice from the orange. Perhaps settling here would be just the thing.

After dropping by a few taverns to inquire about other expeditions forming, Ambar will take in Marvelia.

Geordie squawls again and T'ang seems fascinated by a nearby plume. "Really, kids, behave..." She sighs. "Sorry, Lord Ambar, I fear I must get these rascals to bed. Thank you very kindly for the meal and company. Both were delightful!"

That night she prays, etc, and makes up a draft of things she wants to try to do tomorrow (lots of mundane things mostly but needful just the same):

"Check on Blackie and Juliet before breakfast. Visit the God's House. Arrange provisions. Keep dropping back to the inn to see if anyone's come. Sheez! I could be three people and still not get this all done. Get one (or maybe three or five) of those handy herbal/first aid packs someone mentioned. Check out storage rates. Get more water skins. See if can find any maps or such of the area even if only general. Research goblins. Make contact with..." She suppressed a mighty yawn. "Oh well, I'm bound to change it a hundred times anyway. Night, kiddos!" She carefully stows the pen, ink, and re-recycled scrap of paper and blows out the candle.

Next morning, Kaylin will start following her list:

1. Sure, she'll move to a private room. But she'll probably only need it a couple of nights more. (I hope I said things right earlier. :X She was hoping for two full days in town but if she said only one, then so be it.)

2. "Master Geoff, yes indeed! We definitely need a scout, if you're interested in our preliminary run down there. Actually, I'm not at all familiar with the area we are heading to although others in the party are. This puts me at a bit of a disadvantage with trying to plan. Do you know of anything in particular in the area we'll need to be aware of---besides the goblins, of course? And goblins, any ideas on what sort of proportions of warriors to non-combatants tribes run too?" She smiles. "Please don't feel I'm trying to test you or anything. I'm just trying to get a picture of what we're up against."

3. "Master Galtman, I'm going to be in and out today as I mentioned last night. If anyone should ask, I plan to be back for lunch about, oh, noonish?" Hmm, she wonders if the mysterious Mistress Carmen will return.

4. Kaylin and her two faithful furry companions head to (what was next on the list? ::scrolling up:: that's what I thought :) the God's House. She is particularly interested in their procedures. Are there many little shrines reserved to specific deities or are there a few, ah, 'generic' altars that can be dedicated temporarily to a specific diety?

get the opportunity, I want to arrange to see Bahlder. This is big, and serious. I WON'T turn it down... but I think I have a chance of success if I can coordinate with others.

If I can't reach Bahlder, check out the Slum lords with properties mostly

The Marvelia is a huge building holding many smaller shops. The shops specialize in unusual and exotic wares. Such as spices from foreign lands and delicacies. The prices are outrageous, but shopping there is symbol of being very well to do in Elcadan.

Galtman would recommend visiting a Cartographer's shop if she's interested in maps.

Geoff thinks for a bit and then will say, "The area is lightly wooded and hilly. No overly dangerous creatures live there from my knowledge. The occasional ogre, but nothing worse. The goblins in question are probably small tribe. Say 30-40 warriors? They should be too much trouble."

The horses are fine. No problems there.

Carmen has yet to show.

Returning to the Inn, you find that another applicant has appeared. It is a towering man by the name of Omni. He stands 6'3" with thick muscles.

Hmm... Kaylin finds out about the setup of the Gods' House. "After we take care of our current exercise, we'll look into getting a shrine for Lord Felex here. What do you think, kids?"

Onward. Kaylin has various errands she wishes to run mixed in with returning to the inn to check for prospective adventurers from time to time. Her plan (NOT in any particular order but as time and geography permit) reads:

Buy enough 5GP iron rats for seven people for one week. Buy two weeks grain for two horses. Buy two standard reinforced water skins and two of the "canteens".

Buy three of the herbal/healing packs.

Visit the farmers' market to check for a bag of 'durable' fruit such as a combination of apples and oranges. (But if they have fresh figs, she'll take a couple of kilos of those too)

Check with Galtman about where to buy a few loaves of bread, some cheese and basic stuff as well as something the cats will deign to eat.

Visit the Cartographers to check on maps of the general Elcadan area

and more specifically the area she is headed.

Visit the storage place in Old Town to check on rates.

(I wonder what was on her original list that I've forgotten?)

A few minor items to be covered in EMail.

Back at the Inn, so... matters seem to be fixed with Geoff. T'ang and Geordie seem not displeased with Omni so Kaylin lays out the general plan and terms.

SUBJ: Update (R) FROM: GM Mad 06/08/93 S#: 523601

Kaylin:

The kids mew their agreement.

Iron rations are purchased. You can find dried apples in the market. They will last much longer then the real thing and run 1 gp per lb.

No oranges are found in that form, although dried figs can be found. They are very expensive at 7 gp/lb.

Breads can be purchased at 2 loafs for 15 sp. Arabellan Cheddar can be had at 4 sp/lb.

The cats would lean towards sardines for the trip. They run 4 gp/lb. And a nice salmon for dinner would do them just right!

While in the market, you see a very unusual sight. A small, miniature dragon is seen flying off with a ham in its mouth! An angry butcher chases after it with a cleaver.

You can purchase a map of the area around the temple for 30 gp. It appears to have on it everything you'd need to know.

The Stronghouse rates are based on size of area needed. Rates are approximately 5 gp/day/cubic foot of space used. The Stronghouse has an excellent record and is considered thief proof.

You hold your meeting and everyone shows. All understand the mission and are eager to get going. No other applicants show up. Your crew consists of Geoff the scout, Renford and Omni the warriors, and Gloriana, mage and Priestess of Mystra.

An imposing figure standing 6'9" wearing full plate armor, sporting twin long swords with the hilt of each diagonally positioned above each shoulder for quick draw, peers around the Inn through a face visor of a winged helmet, after entering it.

The figure then reaches up and removes the helmet, revealing the features of a very attractive young woman with shoulder length reddish-blond hair and piercing gray eyes.

She looks around the Inn for several minutes, then places the helmet under one arm as she walks to the bar.

"Good evening, sir! Do you perchance still have any private rooms available?

If not I will take whatever you have available, as well as a good meal and bottle of your best mead." she says, "Oh, before I forget, my name is Shkai'ra (pronounced Shhkay'rah)and give everyone present a round of what their drinking and put it on my bill."

She looks over those present in the Inn again to see if she recognizes anyone, but does not and turns back to the Inn Keep, "Oh, one more thing, where can one bath around here?"
