The Seekers return home to find their mansion on fire!
Finrod casts a Haste spell speeding up several of the Seekers.
Kit and Perrel rush into save people or belongings. Fiben, pausing only to receive a Protection from Evil from Dani and Stephanie go after the fiery figure they spotted.
Inside the mansion, Claudius and Schar emerge from their rooms at the smell of smoke. The wing with the living quarters is free from flames at the moment. They wake the slumbering Blod up and all three escape the mansion.
Perrel and Schar meet halfway and Kit simply keeps on going.
Fiben reaches the fire elemental first and hits it with a Color Spray. No reaction is noticed from the elemental.
Stephanie takes a more direct approach and swings Lightning at the fiery foe. Hasted, she swings four times each stroke spewing fire over the area.
Those watching can see the magical sword seemingly dispersing the fire and draw the flames into itself! The blade glows bright orange. The elemental never had a chance and is destroyed in three swings.
That menace over, the Seekers turn to the task of putting the rest of the fire out. More and more people appear in the area and all join in to save the mansion.
Upstairs, Kit fights the thick smoke to rescue her few belongings and her pet ferret. She tosses most of her stuff out her window. Kit is on the verge of jumping out her window when she suddenly gets an idea. She disappears into the smoke once more.
Stephanie's sword proves to be very effect in putting up the larger fires. The sword swallows up all flames it encounters.
Between the sword, the bucket brigade and those simply throwing snowballs, the fire is under control in twenty minutes.
Kit appears again, no worse for wear.
Elsewhere, Omni stumbles towards the Temple of Azrella. A strange disease is coming over him. It is a struggle to open the door. Once inside, his strength fails him and Omni collapses to the floor.
Morning comes to Gateway and finds the Seekers stirring from their rented rooms at a local inn.
Surveying the damage to the mansion you can all see that you were very fortunate. The elemental appeared in the wing opposite the living quarters. Those areas are intact, but there is smoke damage. However, the areas closer to the damaged wing were weakened. They may not be safe.
The fire damage wing appears to be a complete loss. This area held the kitchen, pantry, dinning room, laundry area and general storage. Most of the servants quarters were in that wing. Fortunately, all the servants escaped without injury.
It appears that repairing the mansion will be a major project if you wish to pursue it. It may be easier to simply tear the remains down. It does not look sturdy at all.
Omni's sight returns and he finds himself laying in a bed covered with blankets. Close by is an attractive woman with jet black hair and matching eyes.
"Rest easy, warrior", she says. "You were the victim of a foul disease caused by magic. You are all right now. You're in the Temple of Azrella."
If asked, the woman will say that she is Lara, a Priestess of Azrella.
Gateway is abuzz with talk of last nights activities. Several bar fights, the Seekers Mansion fire and an attack on the Temple of Heironeous. The very temple where Wendy is being held.
The attackers were found to be magically swayed to the attack. The Zombie Master is believed to be responsible for these acts.
The barbarian from the bar fight is also found to have been magically influenced. That fueled his rage and lead to the fight.
For their parts in the fight, the Seekers are fined 20 gold each to help repair the damage to the tavern.

Once all the reports are in, Claudius will gather the Seekers together, and speak:
"Evidently the Zombie Master isn't done yet. He's trying a harassment cam- paign against us, but why? He hasn't done anything yet that could be called seriously threatening, not with the power this town now has. The temple repulsed their attack, we survived the fire."
"No, this is something more. The ZM isn't done yet; he's trying to make us paranoid so that we make an error. Let's be wary, comrades, but let's not be stupid either."
SUBJ: Perrel... FROM: GM Kill 04/07/92 S#: 455962
I let out a deep sigh of relief when I spot Schar, as well as a quick thanks to Tymora for watching over her.
I quickly head back out of the mansion with her, keeping my eyes open to make sure nothing harms her, or me, for that matter.
Once outside, I join in the efforts to put out the fire, after making sure that Schar's allright that is.
"You all go on." I say afterwards. "I'll take first watch of the place tonight. One of you can relieve me in awhile."
"I doubt the Zombie Master will be back, but a big hole in the building might give some looters a bit too much temptation."
I then wander about the outside of the mansion, making sure nobody takes advantage of this opportunity to gain access.
"20GP?" I ask the judge. "But, your honor, I didn't even participate in the fight. I tried to calm the large fellow down, and when he attacked, my friends lept to my defense. Is that a crime? Should I have told my friends to let him hack me into ground beef?"
"I realize that the bar was damaged, but, your honor, why are we being held accountable for the actions of a magically enchanted barbarian? My friends and I did nothing wrong, unless defending ones self against attack is wrong."
SUBJ: FINROD (R) FROM: SGT STONEY 04/08/92 S#: 502678
The Steel-eyed mercenary multiclass is adamant at the meeting called to decide on actions.
"We MUST stay here in Gateway until after Wendy is executed. I suggest we set a watch of our own at the temple, just in case they need help should the Zombie-Master mount a serious assault. We could put one-third of our number there on eight-hour watches."
"Once that is finished, we have a contract to fulfill... remember, when the Seekers and the Company of the Sword merged, we agreed to accept to terms of Omni's original contract to locate and retrieve the Sword. How can we, as Mercenaries, expect to command high prices and respect, if we do not complete our terms? We cannot. We MUST ignore the gadfly temptations of this Keln Emperor stuff, and we MUST retrieve the Sword."

The night passes without incident for the mansion guards.
Those claiming their belongs next morning find the area to be shaky. The supports moan audibly! No incidents occur though.
Lara responds to Omni:
"I don't know who did this to you. We found you inside the front door of the temple. Realizing your need, we carried you to this bed and examined you. We found that you radiated magic and were diseased. Suspecting that you were the victim of a Contagion spell, I cast a Cure Disease. You were fine after that."
"I have heard talk of fights occurring during the night, even a fire at one of the adventurers mansions! Rumor says that the Temple of Heironeous was even attacked!"
Perrel and the Judge:
"Sir, you must realize that learning the exact truth in this kind of incident is next to impossible. We have learned that several of your band DID participate in the fight. I say fit to levy a flat fine against all of you company at the Inn. Others were fined according to their involvement and face stiffer fines and punishment."
"I am sure that a mere 20 gold coins is a small sum to a member of the Seekers?"
SUBJ: Fiben Bolger (R) FROM: FatalCharm 04/09/92 S#: 519087
Fiben is relieved that neither his nor any of the other Seeker's personal belongings were damaged and that no one was hurt. He asks Kit to help him drag his heavy chest and his belongings to the Inn and promises her he will make it worth her effort later. ;>
The next morning, when the Barfighting Seekers are fined, Fiben gets very upset with "The system" and lets then know it in no uncertain terms. Basically he lets them know he thinks it is sad that the city of Gateway is trying to raise money from its wealthy Heroes rather than giving them the honor they deserve. (True or not, that is how Fiben actually sees it.) But rather than have a huge scene, Fiben takes out 20 gp and tosses it on the table with a final sneer of, "Must be tough to be hard up for cash." ::sneer:: Having come to find out what it is like to be a semi-wealthy adventurer, Fiben has no problem with pitching in 20gp to help the tavern owner. It's just the attitude of the city he has a problem with. But then, Adventures usually are looked down on, by those cowards who are jealous of the adventures lifestyle.
The two days following the bar fight, Fiben has Cont. Light x 2 for his 2nd level spells, which he will use. Then he will switch to having Blur and Mirror Image as his 2nd level spells till further notice. 1st level spells stay the same as originally posted.
Now for Fiben's 4 new air-tight Scroll tubes which have a cap on each end. Fiben will cast Cont. Light on the END of 4 rolled up pieces of Parchment. (2 the first day, 2 the second). Then the rolled parchment he inserts into the scroll tubes and puts the caps on. Tada! Medieval Eveready Flashlight! Or Magical Eveready Flashlight if you prefer, but from this point on, He'll refer to it as his "MEF" :D Eventually someday he hopes to find someone with some sort of Continual Darkness or a Darkness and a Permanency spell to be applied to the opposite end, making it a two way device.
Anyways, Fiben will keep quiet about his new toys for now. Except to one person. The first day he makes a couple, he will wait till twilight then convince Kit to go for a walk with him, but won't tell her why. Once they get some place private, Fiben will pull out a tube and hand it to Kit, telling her to point it away from herself and pull off the cap with the white mark on it. He'll stress that whatever she do, she NOT point it in her face but away from herself. Then he'll stand back and grin as he watches her reaction to his new MEF, or flashlight. ;> And of course, he gives the one to her as a gift.
SUBJ: Fiben 2 FROM: FatalCharm 04/09/92 S#: 509328
Ok, so 1 MEF goes to Kit, one into Fiben's Belt Pouch, and the other two he stores with his other belongings for now.
Fiben, being young still and looking up to his leaders in times of trouble, like the fire, would certainly notice that Omni hasn't been seen or heard from in awhile and would bring up such and suggest that somebody looks for him. Hopefully someone else will figure out where he may have gone to visit.
As for the Mansion, Fiben feels the party should look at some of the other mansions that may be rundown and for sale cheap. Then they should compare estimates of what it would cost to buy and fix up another suitable mansion, compared to the cost of fixing the current mansion, then go with whatever will be cheaper in the long run, without sacrificing features such as space or facilities.
He also agrees the Staff should be assigned to handle the details and will suggest they be rewarded for the added responsibilities. Whichever way they go, new mansion or fix the old, Fiben is willing to donate 1/3 of his cash for now to the cause. If more is needed later, he will probably give more too.
And of course, Fiben is in agreement that they must stick around till Wendy is done away with and hopefully the ZM too. He is constantly prepared for more trouble now. Then later, they should continue after the sword.
Fiben will do his part in taking turns in watches at the temple, and also at the old mansion until all belongings have been extracted safely. While on watch, he keeps his sword, bow and darts all with him.
SUBJ: Mercy FROM: Mastiff1 04/09/92 S#: 515202

This is assuming he is with the Seekers:
Mercy will offer the rest of his gold, except for 500gp, to the pot on getting the mansion fixed or a new on fixed up.
"I also agree that we should wait until Wendy has departed this plane, before we go after the sword. Claudius I would like the late watch so I can spend some time in the library researching the Sword, if that is possible."
Before leaving for the library, Mercy will talk to all the old Doomers about info on the Sword they've collected. All important info as well as maps and sketches will be recorded in his journal.
Mercy will use Moment and Idea while in the Library.
Then replace them with Hold Person & Mind Read
SUBJ: Stephanie FROM: Saphfire 04/11/92 S#: 515133
Forgot about this part. :/
Steph pays her fine gladly. A small price to pay for the fun that was had! ;D
She is tad upset at Fiben's reactions and will corner him later.
"I don't think you understand everything that goes on here. The judge himself said that our 20 gp fine GOES to the tavern. We are not paying the government anything!"
"To be technical, we are employees of the government. They provided us with a living place at no expense and have rewarded us for past deeds. The punishment seemed to be fair in my opinion."
I'll take a turn at guard duty at the Temple in case old ZM shows. :D
At the court the judge responds to Fiben's antics.
"The Crown is not attempting to 'raise money' from you. The fine is for purposes of repairing the inn. As I stated previously, your portion of the fine represents your actions in the brawl. Obviously, your part was very minor considering the size of the fine."
When Fiben mentions the honor he deserves, the judge holds the proceedings.
"We do honor our heroes, however I am at a lost as to who you are? Does anyone in this court recognize this person?"
Apart form the other Seekers, no one does.
"Seems to me, son, that you seem to think that just because you are part of an adventurers group you deserve special treatment. The King's Law is for all citizens of the realm, no exceptions. No one was singled out and these proceedings were handled most fairly."
It is clear that the judge is getting irritable, but is not letting it affect his judgment.
Then Fiben compounds the situation with his last statement and his tossing of money.
"Very well! I'll give you reason to NOT like the system! I find you in contempt of court, in contempt of the Kings Law and his realm!"
Guards approach Fiben to take him to the judge's bench.
"For this action, I fine you either 50 gold or 1 day incarceration in the stockade. Perhaps that will let give the defendant a greater appreciation of the law."
What's it going to be, Fiben? ;)
The next day passes without much interest. Still no sign of Pad or Omni. Word last had Omni at the Temple of Azrella a few nights back. There he was cared for by a Priestess Lara. Neither have been seen since yesterday.
Pad is still believed to be involved in spell research at Karn's Keep.
After his adventurers with the legal system, Fiben tries his hand at magic item creating!
The spells are cast and the results are not has Fiben expected.
First off, the Continual Light spell will eventually consume the paper it is cast upon. This may take years though.
Second, the scroll case is not sufficiently thick enough to stop the illumination. While it does lower the effect to about the equivalent of a nightlight, it still radiates light and can be easily seen in the dark.
Third, the 'beam' projected shoots out of the open end of the case in a 170 degree cone with a length of 60' feet. This beam will not blind anyone it is shone upon. (Unless they are virtually in front of the case.)
It is early the morning of the execution. The Temple of Heironeous is filled with activity, as virtually everyone believes that the Zombie Master will make one last attempt to rescue Wendy.
Gather in front of the church, the Seekers wait.
Roughly half an hour before the execution, two figures appear before you...

I just stand there shaking my head, wondering what Fiben had hoped to gain from that display, because I sure could've told him what the results would be.
Later on that day, after all the excitement is over, I notice that Omni's gone, and I start looking for him, checking about the town for a sign of him.
Not finding any, I go back to the others and inform them of Omni's disappearance.
When Omni does finally show up at the execution, I breathe a sigh of relief.

Well, Fiben now knows Wisdom isn't a job requirement to be a judge in these parts. Seems this judge wasn't even paying attention. Fiben never said he himself was a hero. And if they don't know who he is, all the better. And Fiben never thought he should get special treatment for being a Seeker. Obviously this judge WAS letting his mood effect his Judgment. As the judge babbles on the excuses he has obviously rehearsed many times, Fiben just shuts up and shakes his head almost imperceptibly. Then he tosses down the money with the last comment, and wham, the judge loses it.
When the Guards take him to the bench, Fiben says, "Your HONOR. I misunderstood something. I thought this was a COURT, where we could plead our case. I have co-operated in paying my fine. So if you want to make a mockery of the law by accusing me of being in contempt, that is YOUR choice, Judge, uh, uh, uh What was your name? Long live the King. I'm sure his other judges are fair." Fiben then simply extends his arms so they may tie up his wrists. To himself he thinks what the heck, the mansion burned, this will save him a nights rent at the Inn. And what stories he'll have to tell Kit. Least he can't say he's never been to jail. :D
In jail, Fiben will spend the night being well behaved and good-natured, but will ask for food whenever he sees a guard and will ask for extra blankets, water, ect. (Keeping prisoners is expensive. ;> )
And in the future, Fiben WILL follow Kit's leave and avoid the court system at all costs. ;>
Oh, and when Steph corners Fiben later, Fiben replies, "You just said yourself that it was 'punishment'. That is what I had a problem with. If they had left us alone, I would have paid the tavern owner more than 20gp probably." By this time Fiben is good-natured about the whole deal and has put it behind him.
OOC: Mad, are you saying that my new light doesn't leak light but that the light shines THROUGH the scroll case???? Who ever heard of such a thing? I'm totally confused. Other than that, it's as I expected.
At the temple, Fiben too would be hiding with his bow. Probably across the street in the shadows of another building or something. He is standing with his bow in hand and an arrow loosely knocked. He's just standing there blending with shadows watching and listening and waiting to see what happens.

Claudius does not attend the execution directly. He monitors it from about four hundred feet away, ready to rush in if there's a last battle, but his stomach is a little queasy for some reason. He stays out of it.
When the discussion on the mansion comes up, Claudius feels it is his job to speak...
"The mansion can serve as home no longer.", he rumbles quietly. "Its structural integrity has been compromised by the elemental." He continues to use large words almost unconsciously, perhaps confusing people. "With the edifice eradicated, our best maneuver would be to either reclaim the Company's mansion if it is still available through the crown, or perhaps see if another is available."
"Or..", his eyes light up. "We might actually have the funding with the dragons we've embattled and so forth, perhaps we should apply for the right to crenellate and construct our own fort/castle with the spring. By the period where this campaign against the Keln forces has completed, we should have the spells to make such an effort easier."

(Well, unless the GM has something more in store for the party, this should be a safe place for me to return.)
4 days after the execution, Pad returns from the Keep. Returning to the mansion, he learns for the first time about the events of the past week. "Never occurred to anyone to step on the platform and tell me about this. Sheesh," Pad wanders over to the side of the house grumbling. There he casts a Fly spell and flies up to the window of his room. Speaking a word, he flies in and collects his few belongings.
After securing a room somewhere (perhaps at the mage only inn?), he checks in with the rest of the group and catches up on events. When Kit approaches him about her widget, he agrees to look at it. He opens it up and looks at the various pieces. He then asks what she thought it would do. He snorts at her response.
Pad puts the Con Dark coin back in the widget and closes it up. He then holds up the diamond with the Con Light on it. "Have you ever carefully looked around when you have this open? There's something different about an area lit by one of these than an area lit by a candle, isn't there? No shadows anywhere."
"Now why aren't there any shadows? Because the Con Light isn't a point source of light. It's a point source for the magic energy that turns into light at each and every point within the 60' area of the spell. The energy spreads out from the focus in a manner that can be described as......"
Kit has to sit still and listen to a long lecture on magic dynamics at this point. Pad will go on using terms that pass right over Kit's head. Finally he wraps it up.
"So, the metal in the tube blocks the spread of the energy in various directions. In order to warp the sphere of the spell into a cone, you need to restrict the flow of energy with materials that will do so. In this case, what you need is a piece of crystal properly shaped and containing the proper proportion of lead. Through trial and error you should hit upon the correct combination of shape and lead content eventually."

Her face is red with rage and she somehow manages from strangling the elf.
"If anything, your own words lead you to this! Try paying attention to what you said instead of blaming others for your OWN faults. First off, you accused them of more or less stealing money from us when that was not the case. Then you start in with you great heroes part which, as worded could only be interpreted as speaking of yourself. You insulted the king and have blackened the name of the Seekers! If it was up to me, you could rot in the cell!"
It is very clear that any respect she had for Fiben is gone. After all the law was only looking out for the little guy in this case. It all seems to me that the very act of fighting and casting combat spells in town is probably a no-no. The sentence could have been MUCH worse.
Much later when Omni appears:
"I sense that there is a story here, Omni. Come on, give!" ;D
OOC: Nothing personal, fatal, just the way I see it. ;D
