Operation Graystone Q & A

What is Operation Graystone?

Operations Graystone is a new Message Based D&D game set in the World of Cynalon.

Message Based Game?

A Message Based Game is one that takes place on a forum instead being face to face or in voice chat. The GM will put up a post to get things started. The players respond to the post and to each other. The GM will then answer questions and once all the players have posted or the time limit has been reached, will put up the next post and it all starts over again. Each post typically remains open a week before being closed and a new post put up. It may be sooner if everyone is in early.

World of Cynalon?

That's the name of my game world. This is an long running game world that has spawned many other Message Based Games and a few live ones as well. This setting dates back to the '80's. I freely mixed multiple game worlds from a variety of sources and put them all together in a different way. There may be things you recognize and things that you won't. For instance the game world map is based on the Known World, but is not a completely faithful adaption of it. Likewise I've combined gods from both Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms along with a few new ones to form my pantheon.

What game edition?

As noted above, this is an older, long running game. I started out using First Edition and then later upgraded to Second Edition. Not long after that I switched to using the Skills and Powers options for character design. I never bothered going any further than that, so those are the rules used for this game. Using Skills and Power is an option, not a requirement. You can just go with the default versions of the classes. The system allows you to drop racial and class abilities and take different ones in their place. Its a way to make your character and class different from everyone else. Its meant to add spice to things and not be overpowering. All characters are subject to GM approval.

Character generations made using point pools. No random dice rolling is involved. This will be covered more in the Set Up Rules as will the House Rules. A players ability to role play a character is far more important than your knowledge of game mechanics. In a message based game, the GM handles all of those things.

What's the situation?

Back in 1989 the World of Cynalon officially started with a game called The Frontier. It ran on Q-link back in the day. That game started out with Adventurers being recruited to a reclaimed City of Gateway to go forth and explore the Frontier Lands beyond it. Operation Graystone takes place before that game and will tell the story of how Gateway was taken back.

If you are curious to check the other games out to get a feel for this world, you can find the Forum Here: Game Forum

My section for games is the Game Zone – GM Mad area. In it there is a Campaign History forum that goes over all the history in the World of Cynalon. The World of Cynalon History thread covers everything leading up to the reclaiming of Gateway. The other threads cover events from other World of Cynalon games and stories.

If you are interested in joining check out the Set Up Rules and and the other pages in this section. Other commonly asked questions will be added to this page as they come up.
