SUBJ: The Frontier #124 (R2) FROM: GM Mad 01/08/92 S#: 444342
The merger of the two groups seems to be a step closer after a plea from Schar for cooperation. Two group leaders (Omni and Claudius) were suggested as well as a new overall name (Seekers of the Sword). Several others have agreed or are simply not interested in voting.
Armon is slightly put out when Tania, Stephanie and Dani interrupt his practice. The gnoll was a Phantasmal Force while the stranger was Armon himself under an Alterself spell.
Kit has joined the group to lead you all safely down to Kingsport.
Sherry and Terry have forgiven Fiben and the incident is forgotten.
The days slowly slide past as the final preparations are completed.
One afternoon Claudius gets a strange feeling as if he is being watched. He looks about be sees no one. Finrod gets the same feeling later that same day. The day after that Pad, Perrel and Schar also get the feeling that unseen eyes are upon them!

Claudius bustles over when he finds out Finrod and Perrel are arguing loudly. He looks around quickly: "Blod! Help me break them apa..."
But no violence ensues, and Schar acts to de-intensify things. Claudius lis- tens in, and nods. "AGREED.", he snaps firmly, hoping to bury the fractionalism right now.
He bustles over to Omni: "Let's hammer this out.", he notes. He looks uneasily over his shoulder: "Before we have a civil war. I suggest we let the management develop naturally as required.. we both probably have different ways of doing things. We can compromise when need be. We might need a symbol or battle standard for everyone, just so that we know who's who for the first few weeks." He smiles a bit humorously.
He leans back, and waits for a reply (though the conversation was probably loud enough for anyone to jump in :P) :)

Pad informs everyone that he believes they are being scryed. The next day, he memorizes 3 Detect Scrying spells and runs them back-to-back starting 3 hours before the time he had the feeling of being watched the day before. This will give him from 6 to 8.5 hours of detection time. He'll also carry a couple of Detect Invisibles. If he gets the feeling of being watched again and it doesn't register as scrying, he'll cast one and start looking around for an invisible/hidden watcher.

She wanders off distractedly leaving Pad standing there, looking for the either of Legendary Duo, Omni or Claudius, after encountering Steph again, trying to find out the agenda...

Since it is apparent that the Party isn't leaving immediately, when she finds Omni and/or Claudius, Kit will tell them she needs someplace/one to Bunk up with 'til then...
She will pick up the fact the Party is reforming out of two previously separate groups & is in the process of hashing out the Name & Command structure of such...
Taking this as an opportunity, since she is currently at loose ends & not under any other contracts... she will ask to be considered for membership...
Being new, & so uninformed of the whole thing (& not really able to contribute to the debate), she'll spend her time wandering the town... seeing what there is to see (& what's not being watched particularly well... ;> )...
She'll also want to know just what the Group Plans are once their destination is reached, she has the rest of her belongings stashed there & needs to pick them up... (just by co-incidence in a Sea-Chest... :> )...
If her application is accepted, she will attempt to get to know the rest of the Party by sight (at least) & try & find out eaches special area of expertise... gravitating to those who share her interests (Rangers & Thieves)...
During her intros, perhaps some will notice a wiggling & chittering coming from the bag that dangles at her waist...

The healer is pleased to see that she has broken through the thick-headedness on both sides. The matter apparently mostly settled, Schar retires to her chambers to collect her belongings for the long trip ahead.
Later she gets the strange feeling that she is being watched. Her curiosity is further piqued when she finds out that others have had similar feelings. Then Pad makes his announcement the healers jaw almost hits the floor.
"The Zombie Master!? We killed him a few weeks back!"
Thoughts of "how can this be?" race through her head.
"The Zombie Master was a master Necromancer and foul Priest of Nerull, God of Death and Darkness. We of the Company encountered him in a graveyard where he was warping the forest around him to evil. He had a horde of zombies, including monster zombies; ogres, rust monsters and even a few hill giants. We managed to overcome him, but at a cost. The Company stormed his lair and slew him. His body was burned to prevent his return... But now I'm not sure..."
"If this is the Zombie Master, then he must be after revenge. I am curious, why would he scry Pad and the other former Seekers?"

Blod decides to spend most of his time with his beloved wife and son while the preparations are going on. At one point, he sees Kit wondering around and decides to introduce himself. Blod stands nearly 7 foot tall and is fairly bulging with muscles. He carries a rather large two-handed sword and always seems to have his plate mail on.
"Hi! I'm Blod! You must be Kit. Whatcha got in the bag? Is it a pet? My wife keeps a boa constrictor that seems to be fond of halflings."
When talk comes up of the Zombie Master, Blod sits up and begins to pay attention. When someone mentions giants, Blod gets a gleam in his eyes and begins to flex his massive hands. "What does scry mean? If this guy is bugging us, maybe we should go look for him and teach him not to mess with us! It could be our first act as a group."

"Scrying is a term that we use to refer to magical means of eavesdropping," Pad explains, "This Zombie Master actually sounds a lot like someone we locked horns with a few months back ourselves. We never actually saw him. We just stumbled into his lair and played with a horde of monster zombies like you describe."

After listening to Schar, I stand there for a few moments, letting the anger burn away, before I speak coldly.
"All right, I guess..."I say, before wandering away from the meeting, my thoughts still going back to Omni's words in the tower.
Later, I seek out Schar and apologize to her for my outburst.
"I'm sorry, dear. I don't know what came over me." I say, before hugging her and kissing her. "I guess things have just gotten the better of me lately."
Sometime later that day, I wander down and find Finrod.
"Pardon me..."I say to him. "But, I wanted to apologize for this afternoon. I'm afraid something else was upsetting me, and I may have taken it out on you. My apologies for that, I should not have reacted so poorly."
"Although, Omni IS the better leader." I add with a smile.
When I hear of the Zombie Master, my jaw just about drops to the floor!
"Urk..." Is all I manage to say in a strangled type tone, before I compose myself.
"Oh boy, this does not bode well." I think to myself as my mind races, trying to figure out how he could still be around, even after we burned his body.
"His body? His body? HIS BODY!" I suddenly say, as it dawns on me just how come he's still around. "We never killed him! It was probably a zombie he had acting like him! And we fell for it!"
"Well, Omni, do we go finish what we started first, or head straight for the boat?" I ask him.

And speaking of good Role Playing, applause to Omni! That scene on the tower was heart wrenching. :)
Well, Fiben has been all packed and ready to go. What he needs to get his mind off things is to get back to the adventuring and keeping himself occupied. So he sat in his room waiting, and waiting, and waiting. After it became apparent they weren't leaving that day, or the next, or the next, Fiben finally starts coming out of his shell again just to keep from going insane if nothing else.
He heads out to find Omni when he overhears talk about the scrying. He heads for Pad to see if there is anything he can do to help when he hears Schar's report on the Zombie Master...
"Excuse me? A master Necromancer? Good gods above, Padraig, didn't you say that new powerful staff of yers was a staff of the necromancer? Is it per- haps from the SAME necromancer? Maybe that is how he scryed you!"
Fiben says all this while slowly backing away from Pad. "I knew that thing just sounded to dangerous. Shouldn't we just get rid off it?"
Fiben books on outta there and goes looking for Omni. "Omni, I have a request to make. I hear talk that your party, err the half of the party that used to be the Company of the Swords that is, still has some magical items your trying to find uses for. What I'm interested is that Cloak +2. You see, I'm a Scout and a spy and armor inhibits me to much so I could use the protection. By the way, is it black? The color matters to me to, as the purpose for wearing a cloak is to hide myself. The Seekers also found a substantial amount of monetary treasure, which I believe Finrod is holding on to, but I believe part of it is my share. So I'm willing to pay you for the cloak if I have enough."
And in quieter tones, "I'm glad to hear Schar shook some sense into everyone. After all, it was YOUR group who has been on this quest for the sword and WE just happen to drop in by mistake and decided to join up with you. For you to be ousted as leader would be absurd. But on the other hand, Claudius is a good leader to. I'm sure this friction bothers him as much as it does you. He just tries to do right by us. Give'em a chance."

OOC again: My inexperience is gonna show here but wondered if someone could explain a couple things. I assume the +2 on the cloak is an improvement on AC. What is the ring +1 though? +1 to attack and damage rolls? AC also? Could they have other as yet unknown functions? Just curious how it all works. :)

Armon's obviously getting restless being cooped up, and yearns for the city. Finally, he makes his mind up.
"I'm leaving for Gateway tomorrow morning, period. If anyone wants to come... well, fine. But I don't think I'm coming back."
With that, and a flash of a red cloak, Flamehilt leaves to pack his things.

Omni smiles when Fiben makes his request.
"Of course you may have the cloak. Monetary value will not be necessary. And please... think of the Sword as our quest, not mine."
He also cheers up enough to respond to Claudius.
"I agree that this is the best way to handle the groups, for the time. Our charter is flexible enough to be negotiable, besides the quest for the Sword. So long as that much is left intact, I believe my group will be happy."
Then the unfortunate news of the scrying comes. Omni had not been victim of this himself, but is concerned when he hears word. But his reaction is much more when Padraig's words reveal the source....
"The Zombie Master? But that can't be right..."
His face suddenly becomes grim.
"This changes everything. We have a duty to eradicate this threat before we continue, and an obligation to the priestess who helped us. Your thoughts have merit, Perrel, but there's another, more grim possibility. What all tome's did Jonathan take from his lair?"

"Alas, we MUST take the time to ace this Zombie-master before moving off on our quest for The Sword... to allow him th spy on us gives him the initiative when we return to this area in a few months. I'm going to hold the post open until Saturday to let you guys decide exactly what you are going to do. Plus it'll let me get over a touch of the flu.
A few notes that I can add, is that the Company ran into the Zombie Master in the graveyard before the Seekers encountered their force of undead. Also the two lairs are almost 300 miles apart!
Jonathon's tomes were on Necromancy, but none of them were magical. Jon took them with him when he departed.
Congratulations to Perrel, who figured out how ZM tricked you with a Zombie Double many moons ago... ;)

He gathers the group together: "I think we know where the ZM's lair is, and thanks to our teleport..he is one jump away. I vote we give this chap a lesson in manners, what say you?"

"Well, however Zombie Master has done it, he's still around, and still a force to contend with." I say disappointedly. "I agree that we have to take care of him though. We owe that much too a certain lady who had asked us to take care of him."
"We can teleport to him? How?" I ask Claudius. "I don't remember seeing a teleport ring like the one in the basement, in his lair?"
The group discovers that they are being scryed by the Zombie Master! Realize that both the old groups have encountered this evil necromancer; they decide to deal with ZM once and for all.
Before departing, Armon announces that he is leaving. He activates the pillars and teleports himself back to Gateway.
Shortly after that, a dark elf arrives and asks to join up with your band. (New PC.)
Preparations and packing complete, the Seekers of the Sword begin their journey. The mages power up the pillars and you are on you way!
Once powered up, each of you steps onto the platform that is surrounded by six pillars. Soft blue electrical arcs flash about the formation. Once in the middle of the platform you wink out of existence.
A split second later, you reappear in a similar formation many hundreds of miles to the south. Blue dots play before your eyes and it takes several moments for your vision to clear.
You find yourselves in a medium-sized cave bearing a pillar formation much like the one in the keep. One passage leads away. This travels to a fork. One way leads to a shaft that plunges deep into the earth. The other leads to the former demon's cave and the entrance to this cave system.
A few rats scurry about, but otherwise there is no sign of life. A Wall of Stone covers the shaft.
SUBJ: Background (R) FROM: GM Mad 01/18/92 S#: 787240
Some background on this place...
The Seekers were returning to Gateway after completing their first mission into the Frontier. (Featuring the Mountain Monster and a certain wench named Wendy.)
They were following what appeared to be an army of humanoids that were marching towards Gateway. En route, they stumbled across the ruins of a city. The city was filled with hobgoblins and priests of Hextor. More importantly, a small Green Dragon was lair in the middle of town!
The Seekers fought long and valiantly and managed to conquer of the forces of evil. In the back of the Dragon's lair, they discovered a great stone door that they could not open. (No one had Knock at the time... :/)
Later, the Seekers returned to investigate the door. Upon opening the door, the group was confronted by a demon! They managed to slay it in a terrific battle. They then found the cave system that you now find yourselves in.
The Seekers went down the shaft and into a small cave. A single passage curved away from the cave. It ended at a much larger cave that held an undead Beholder. Again the Seekers triumphed.
It was discovered that a cave opening was covered over by a Wall of Stone. It was Dispelled and the Seekers entered into a great, dark cavern.
A virtual army of undead moved to counter them. Almost 100 zombies marched on them! Mixed in were rust monster zombies, ogre zombies and hill giant zombies.
Another terrific battle followed that more or less ended in a draw. The Seekers inflicted and took heavy damaged.
The Seeker retreated and a Wall of Stone was placed over the shaft.
And now you have returned...

Also, the mages need to decide what spells were used to power the platform. You needed 15 spell levels to bring the entire group here.
Pad's staff, Melvin thinks to Pad that "I like this place. Smells of death. Are you going to let me feed soon? I'm hungry!"

Omni blinks a moment, reacting to the unusual effect of the teleporter. Then he moves clear and begins looking around, while waiting for the rest of the group to come across. He listens carefully as he is (presumably) told the history of this place. When he begins speaking, he does so in a low voice, first to Claudius:
"Do we know for sure that our friend is on the other side of that wall? Or for that matter, are there any spells that could check for us?"
Omni also makes sure to address the rest of the group before any unnecessary clamor begins.
"Let's get a feel for our surroundings and look around a bit, but no one wander off alone. We can't sure what all is lurking out there, or how much the Zombie Master knows. For the same reason, try to say as quiet as possible.... any advantage is an advantage.

Kit falls in as they troop to the Pillars... taking in everything with studied calm (Little Does She Know, eh?... ;> )...
As they step one by one into the Flashes, she'll fall into line next to the Long Haired Elf who's been making himself scarce (Fiben... :> )... she knows a fellow light finger when she sees one... :>
If he makes eye contact before they go, she'll pop him a wink & a big grin... as much for her sake as his, before they take "the step"...
If anyone has mentioned an offer of StoneSkin protection, she'll certainly accept same... if not, no matter... (Geez, Pad, no hard feelings, eh?, How'd Kit know you Grew?... ;>...)...
On arrival in the Cavern, she'll drop into a crouch ,swiveling left & right, arrow nocked, until she recovers sufficiently from the experience... at least giving the impression to any foes that she is ON it... even when she is Not... :>
At Omni's whispered admonition, she'll then sprint silently to the wall, scan their surroundings quickly, & slide along it, Bow ready, to the Fork... watching the Up Tunnel... waiting...
She'll keep a weather eye There until the SotS (What an acronym!... :> ) sort themselves out & she receives further orders...
SUBJ: FINROD (R) FROM: SGT STONEY 01/21/92 S#: 466503
Immediately prior to entering the Pillar Network, the Elven Mercenary Multiclass casts STRENGTH on his lovely wife. He then contributes three levels of spell energy (one first & 1 second lvl spells) to the effort to transport everyone.
On transport, he carries sword drawn in one hand, and a pitch ball in the other. He draws a sigh of relief when neither proves necessary. Quickly, he moves off with the new scout and Steph (probably Fiben as well) down the corridor to the first intersection. Once it has been checked out, he leaves those three to secure the intersection, and returns to the main group to report.
He addresses both Claudius and Omni, demonstrating his loyalty to the new dual command structure. "Sirs, the tunnel is secured to the first intersection, and guards are in place. I suggest we move with speed and care, as we cannot be sure the Zombie Master did not sense our arrival."
The Mercenary comes to the position of At Ease, awaiting further orders.

First off, Fiben thanks Omni for his new Magic Cloak. Then he goes to Claudius and shows him his new cloak, and tells him that there is no need to give him preferential treatment next time they get a magic haul. "Besides," he admits, "I accidentally wasted that Philter of Love ya gave me." He doesn't tell him what exactly he did with it though. (I'm too nice for my own good. :D)
(No answers to my questions on magic cloaks and rings?)
Later, when Pad calls Fiben an idiot when he is just trying to help, Fiben replies in rather sarcastic tones, "Forgive me, M'Lord. Some of us weren't born with complete knowledge of magic and have to learn as we grow. Someday I hope to grow up to be a genius, just like you, M'lord." He then leaves the room thankful that one thing Pad doesn't know is Elven Sign Language. (:X :D)
Fiben would probably be cross if it weren't for the fact that he receives word that they are about to leave and chase down the Zombie Master. Time to go back to the business of adventuring! Fiben zips up to his room to grab his backpacks. "Hmmm," he thinks, "Just enough time to redo my spell lists." and grabs his Spellbook. That done, he grabs his gear and heads for the Pillars.
When Kit comes alongside and winks at him, Fiben smiles back and says, "Sorry for not introducing myself earlier. I'd do it now, but looks like we're about to get busy. Name's Fiben by the way..." And into the Pillars they go! Fiben grips his gut, waiting for the nausea to settle in, but as the blue lights stop flashing in his brain, he smiles that the sickness didn't come. "Gonna be a pro at this in no time", he thinks. Then he immediately leaps aside and does a tuck and roll to avoid Kit who looks like she's about to pounce on somebody or something. ;D
Fiben follows the lead of the more experienced adventure, drops his gear near the pillar and sets off after Finrod, whispering to Kit, "Lets see how good ya are, Wild One". When left to Guard he wall, Fiben takes his Short Bow off his back, knocks an arrow, then moves to the side wall and Blends with the shadows there, simply waiting for action.

When the party is ready to go, so is Perrel, his gear readied and his new spells in place.
As the mages start powering up the pillars, I drop to one knee, and pray to Tymora for the blessings of her luck on Schar, the party, and myself, in this upcoming encounter.
After teleporting, I cautiously look about, before drawing my rapier quietly.
When Omni mentions that silence is a good idea, I try to move about as quietly as possible.
I stand near Schar, and wait for the two leaders to decide what our next actions will be.
SUBJ: Blod FROM: Blod 01/22/92 S#: 847812
"Finally, we are going to see some action!" is Blod's only thought. He kisses his beloved Zynara and his son good bye, and then heads for the pillars. Seeing his friends and new companions ready for adventure, Blod cannot help but be excited.
When they arrive at the cave, Blod will step off the platform, draw his little sword, and await his first challenge!

Once the cave is discovered to be empty of foes, Steph sheaths her sword and finds a good place to sit. The talk of the others does not seem to interest her much. She'll continue to rest until it is time to go back down the shaft.

The normally quiet and gentle healer has not been herself in preparing for the upcoming confrontation with the Zombie Master. Undead are the major foes of her religion, so she is almost in a berserker frenzy!
For a change, it is Perrel who does the calming down! ;D

Schar is excited when we finally do arrive at the cave system.
"Where is he? Where is that evil madman? Down there? Let's go!"
When/If undead are encountered, my first attack will be to turn them. The next round, I'll cast Disruption on my mace and then wade into the abominations of life!

Pad made an open offer to the group weeks ago to provide anyone who wished one with a Stoneskin. (If the GM allows the request retroactively, Kit, fine. But Pad isn't wasting a 4th list spell on the day of the combat for that spell.)
Pad will ask Sharadin, Sherry, Terry, and any other mages who are being left behind if they'd care to take some of the burden of powering the Pillars off of our mages.
Before going through the pillars, Pad renews the Invisibility spell on Sean. He also starts a Detect Invisible just before stepping through.
When Melvin makes his comments, Pad thinks at it, "I was unaware you needed to feed on anything. What do you require and how often?"
(By the way, Mad, you never gave me any idea how many charges the staff has.)

I worry somewhat when I see Schar biting at the chomp to throw herself into danger, and I do my best to calm her down.
"Now, now, dear, I'm supposed to do the foolhardy things." I say with a wink.
As we proceed, I watch her carefully; grateful that I did renew the Sacred Guardian spell with the way she's acting.

"No time like the present!", the mage bellows at Finrod, doing a fair imitation of a mercenary general. He looks at Omni: "We dare not wait and give our enemies time to prepare. I suggest we dispel the wall, and advance quickly."
He looks at Fin: "You're on point, take who you need. Fiben, you take rear guard, take who YOU need. Mages in the middle, advance!!"
He then pauses, and looks at Omni. "Is that reasonable to you, milord?"
